The structural stress phenomena of domes of different geometry
The structural aspects of domes of different geometry will constitute the largest part of the thesis. Initially it will address conditions of self weight, where appropriate, if time permits I will also introduce a horizontal load. Key questions to be explored are:
- What is the influence of the geometry on the stresses that develop in the
dome? - Is there an optimal shape for a dome of uniform thickness under self
weight? - Under what conditions do tensile circumferential membrane stresses develop
in some parts of a dome under self weight? - What bending moments develop in domes of different geometries? How can these
be minimised so that the thickness of the dome can be retained at a low
value?
